Looking Back 2023

As the year 2023 draws to a close, it’s time to take stock and prepare for the upcoming year, 2024. Finally, the COVID quarantine was over, and society began to return to normal.  Though there were reports of some variants, it appears that vaccines have effectively addressed the issue, much like the flu.

On the technical side, it appears that ChatGPT and the AI have absorbed all the oxygen. However, my main interest has remained in learning front-end development through WordPress, which powers over 43% of global websites.

Previous year-end review posts can be found here: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Learning and Sharing

As I have written previously, I have been an avid WordPress learner, following each release and discussion on GitHub, practicing my preferred features, and sharing my learning experiences with others.

Since the editor customization phase of the Gutenberg project has been completed and merged with WordPress 6.3, I devoted the entire year to learning and practicing the features. Some of my favorite topics included theme.json and Global Styles, Command Palette, Navigation block, the new block pattern feature, the WordPress Playground and others.

Learning Documentation

I only posted 24 posts in the year 2023, though I have a few posts almost ready to be published for December (backdated) as I was unable to finish them because of the flu and allergies.

  • Theme.json and Global styles
  • Block Editor Style Book
  • Font Library and font management
  • Create block theme plugin
  • WordPress Playground
  • New block patterns management feature
  • Site Editor command palette

My learning notes posting have decreased significantly compared to the previous years. This is because I prepare my learning for sharing notes in Obsidian, and those articles take time to prepare and submit the original draft for publication consideration.

Articles Published

For the past four years, I had been a contributing author for CSS-Tricks; but it abruptly stopped accepting guest author articles in early 2023. The following articles were prepared and editorially completed in 2022 and published in early 2023.

I also contributed the following four articles, two each, for the WordPress Developer Blog and Smashing Magazine:

Smashing Magazine

Note: A few drafts have been submitted and are being assessed for their suitability for publication.

In Closing

Despite the abrupt end of guest articles in CSS-Tricks in early 2023, I was still able to continue learning and sharing on Smashing Magazine and the WordPress Develop Blog.

Just like in the past, I will continue to strive to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle through my creative learning and sharing. This year, I intend to write more posts on this site than I have in in the past.

I’m looking forward to a better learning and sharing year in 2024.
